About Royal Leamington Spa

Since the beginning of its renaissance in 1814 Royal Leamington Spa has become the jewel in the heart of Warwickshire.

Historic Regency architecture, fine shops and magnificent boulevards; Leamington Spa is the perfect destination away from the hustle and bustle of the typical day-to-day pressures. The town is split north and south by the River Leam.

The Royal Pump Rooms, at the heart of Leamington Spa on the Parade are a significant centre of Warwickshire's culture and tourism. Perhaps the most famous landmark in Royal Leamington Spa. The Pump Rooms exude a historic charm and date from the early 19th century when the town developed from an agricultural village, to a spa resort and then into the thriving town that it is today.

In 1814 the Royal Pump Rooms and Baths were opened close to the River Leam, attracting many visitors, hoping to soothe various aches, pains and ailments by bathing in pools filled with the salty spa water. It also included the world's first gravity fed piped hot water system of modern times, which was designed and installed by the engineer William Murdoch. Leamington Spa soon became a popular spa resort which attracted the wealthy and famous, and construction began of numerous Georgian townhouses to accommodate visitors.

Painstakingly restored and re opened in 1999, The Royal Pump Rooms is home to The Assembly Rooms and Conservatory, Art Gallery and Library as well as The Tea Rooms.

Jephson Gardens which is home to Redcliffe Catering's esteemed venues was voted ‘Best Park of the Year 2004 by the Royal Horticultural Society.

First laid out in 1831 as informal riverside walks, the original Newbold Gardens were later developed as a formal pleasure grounds in honour of Dr Henry Jephson, who promoted Leamington as a spa town. Leamington Spa’s Jephson Gardens gained prominence for its entertainments; military bands, promenading, croquet and tennis, fountains, illuminations, trees and flowers and are currently Grade II listed on the English Heritage register of historic parks and gardens.

As with many parks, they fell into slow decline after World War II but since 1999 have been restored and renewed by Warwick District Council thanks to a grant of in excess of £3 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund. This delightful Victorian oasis now houses a stunning sub-tropical glasshouse, restaurant and teaching studio – the jewel in the crown of Leamington Spa’s wealth of parks and gardens.
